CSK Welcomes Dewald Brevis
New Delhi [India] - On April 18, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) announced the signing of South African cricketer Dewald Brevis to fill the spot of the injured Gurjapneet Singh for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. Brevis will join the squad for a fee of INR 2.2 crore, as reported by a leading sports news outlet.
With a record of 81 T20 matches under his belt, Brevis has amassed 1787 runs, boasting a personal best of 162 runs. He made two appearances for South Africa in T20 internationals during 2023 and has prior IPL experience, having played for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in both 2022 and 2024. Earlier this year, he was instrumental in MI Cape Town's first SA20 title victory, scoring 38 runs off 18 balls in the final match.
In the SA20 tournament, Brevis finished as the sixth-highest run-scorer, accumulating 230 runs at an impressive strike rate of 184. His remarkable hitting skills and unique shot-making have garnered attention from various franchise leagues, including participation in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and representing MI in Major League Cricket (MLC) in the USA.
Although Brevis entered the IPL 2025 auction with a base price of Rs 75 lakh, he went unsold. Nevertheless, he has been in excellent form recently, ranking as the second-highest run-scorer in both South Africa's one-day and first-class competitions. At just 21 years old, he has already been likened to AB de Villiers and is affectionately nicknamed 'Baby AB.'
Gurjapneet Singh, a fast bowler from Tamil Nadu, was acquired by CSK for Rs 2.2 crore during the auction but has yet to play this season due to injury.
Currently, CSK finds itself at the bottom of the points table, having secured only two victories out of seven matches. Their regular captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, is sidelined with an elbow injury, leading to MS Dhoni stepping in as the captain.
CSK recently broke their losing streak with a crucial five-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the ongoing IPL season. MS Dhoni's exceptional performance, along with Shivam Dube's steady yet aggressive batting, helped end Chennai's five-match winless run.
Dhoni remained not out with 26 runs from 11 balls, hitting four boundaries and a six, while Dube contributed an unbeaten 43 runs from 37 balls, guiding CSK to victory in the final over with three balls remaining.
